Chatteris Historic Festival 2010

Historic Festival

Chatteris Medieval Festival 2009 was a great success and the organisers are now busy organising 2010 event, determined to build on the success and widen the appeal of the festival.

Visitors to last year’s event were asked to fill in a questionnaire about the festival and the organisers (Chatteris Town Council, Fenland District Council and volunteers) are grateful to those who took the time to do so. One of the comments which appeared on a number of questionnaires was the need to widen the theme and make it less specialised.

The organisers have taken that point on board and have decided that the 2010 Festival will be a multi-period event with the medieval era still at its heart but re-enactors from other historic periods will also be attending.

The Festival will, therefore, be re-named as the Chatteris Historic Festival 2010. The event will take place on 25th, 26th and 27th June 2010 and Furrowfields Recreation Ground will once again be the venue.

Many of the attractions which proved so popular in 2009 will go ahead again but there will be new activities in addition. It is hoped the walking parade will continue to grow, the dog show will return and the medieval meal and merriment will once again entertain. Most of the local schools are already committed to attending the Schools’ Living History Encampment on the Friday.

Letters have gone out to organisations and clubs in the town inviting their members to take part in the walking parade which will be held on the Saturday and will follow the same route as the parades in 2008 and 2009 (starting at Church Lane car park and making its way to Furrowfields via Market Hill and High Street). If you are a member of an organisation or a club please encourage them to take part.

Although there is a dedicated band of volunteers, councillors and council officers busy planning the event, the organisers would love to hear from anyone willing to help. If you would like to be involved or have any ideas please come along to the next open meetings on Wednesday 21st April and Wednesday 12th May at the Council Chambers, 14 Church Lane, Chatteris. The meetings are fairly informal and tea, coffee and biscuits are always available!
