Some FAQs on the change from 1st October '08

Q. Who are Esperto and what is their relationship to EEDA?

A. From the outset Esperto, an independent, commercial web services company, have provided the software, system and support of the Eastspace project. On learning of EEDA’s decision to cease the funding of Eastspace Esperto decided to offer users several solutions to enable the continued use of the Eastspace system.

Q. Why can’t I simply move my site to a free or very lost cost hosting service?

A. For technical reasons an Eastspace website has to be converted in to a form that can be transferred to a conventional website hosting solution. This process is called HTML conversion and is one of the choices open to you.

Q. If I decide to have my Eastspace website converted to HTML and then have it hosted by somebody else can I continue to edit it myself.

A. This depends on the solution you choose, but it is fair to say that most low cost hosting solutions do not offer the ability to simply self edit content. This is something you will need to check before you make your decision.

Q. If I decide to go for the HTML conversion option can I have all of my weblets converted?

A. Only the non interactive ones can be converted. Forums for example will be lost.

Q. Will you help me transfer my Eastspace site to another hosting solution if I choose this option.

A. Sorry, but no. Our responsibility will end with providing you, by email an HTML version of your site. You will need to select a hosting solution that can provide you with any technical help needed to transfer your website.

Q. If I choose to stay with Eastspace and select the supported option what level of support will I get?

A. The staff here at Esperto who have provided the technical help and support during the last six years will still be available. However providing high quality support is, of course, very expensive and without the funding from EEDA it wont be possible to exactly match the very prompt service that has been the norm. We will however aim to respond to all support requests within 24 hours during normal business hours.

Q. If I opt to stay with Eastspace but my budget only allows for the non supported service what happens if I need help.

A. The user manual will continue to be accessible on line.

Q. If I decide to stay with Eastspace, either with the supported or unsupported service will I notice a break in service or any other changes?

A. No, other than a possible short outage whilst the servers are updated you will notice no changes. Your current login details will remain the same and your weblet(s) will not be effected.

Q. What happens if I have a private web address?

A. If you are opting for the HTML conversion choice then you will need to get the IP address of your private web site address changed to point at whoever you select to host your website. If you opt to stay with Eastspace then you may have to get the IP changed but we will advise you in plenty of time.

Q. Does everybody qualify for the transition grant ?

A. No, it only applies to those websites that are deemed 'active' A simple definition of having being updated since January '08 is used for active.

Q. How do I apply for the grant for HTML conversion or continued use of Eastspace?

A. If you select one of these choices then we will obtain the grant on your behalf.

Q. Who do I contact with any queries about the change?
