All Norfolk

A search on ‘All Norfolk’ will search all websites which are included in the Norfolk Portal, rather than search the single website from which the search is initiated.

Look and Feel

The ‘look and feel’ of a website relates to its design, layout and accessibility in terms of use of colours, headings, graphics, text, drop-down menus, etc.  The Norfolk Portal is delivered in accordance with the look and feel of websites on which it resides, it does not have its own unique look and feel.  The ‘look and feel’ is sometimes referred to as the ‘livery’ of the website.

Portal

See Virtual Portal below.

Questions file

A Questions file is used to document the key words to be associated with specific web information, allowing recommended links to be displayed.

Recommended links

Recommended links associate terms and phrases with web documents, such that when the terms and phrases are used as search criteria, links to documents will be displayed before the list of other search results.  Recommended links are likely to be used when there is an obvious choice of where to direct the searcher.

Search box

A search box is the box displayed on the screen in which the user types the search criteria.

Search engine

A search engine is the software which finds relevant information in response to the keywords and phrases typed into a search box.

Search Provider

A Search Provider is a company which provides a search facility for web-based information.

Spider

A spider is the software which creates indexes for the search engine to use.  In terms of the Norfolk Portal the spider indexes information across all websites of participating organisations.

Style Guide

A Style Guide defines the appearance of information to be displayed in terms layout, fonts, colour, etc to give a coherent look and feel to all information from a given website.  It describes HOW information should be displayed rather than WHAT the content should be.

Virtual Portal

A Portal is a website which aims to be the first port of call, or a ‘one stop shop’, for Internet users.  In the case of the Norfolk Portal it is intended to be the best place to start searching for any information relating to Norfolk public services.  The Norfolk Portal is called a Virtual Portal as it does not have its own website and ‘look and feel’, it can only be found on the websites of participating organisations in the ‘look and feel’ of those organisations.
