Description and history:
St. Leonard’s is the ancient church of Sandridge Parish, and until the creation of the daughter churches of St.Saviour’s, Sandpit Lane, and St. Mary’s Marshalswick, it served an area covering the whole of the modern civil parish and beyond. It is situated next to the Queen’s Head pub at the heart of the village. The lychgate serves as the village War Memorial, and the large churchyard provides a green space in the village centre.
The kernel of the present building was consecrated in 1119, and is one of a cluster of churches in Herts., Beds. and Bucks. dedicated to St. Leonard, the patron saint of prisoners and pregnant women. The names of the vicars and curates are recorded back to John Ball at the time of the Black Death in 1349.
